TARRAGONA
Regular buses run from Salou to Tarragona which is well worth a visit with its wealth of ancient buildings and monuments including Roman aqueducts, amphitheatres and monasteries.
SALOU
Next to Cambrils is Salou the most important town of the Costa Dorada.
GOLF ON THE COSTA DORADA
Golfers may want to leave the rest of the family at Port Aventura while they enjoy a day out at one of the excellent courses in the area. There are 18-hole courses in Reus and Mont-roig del Camp. The nine-hole Club de Costa Dorada near Tarragona has a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, a children's playground and restaurant.
Ermita de Santa Maria de Vilafortuny (Vilafortuny)
This hermitage can be found along the coastal route from Salou to Cambrils, just after hotel Cambrils Princess. Build in the 1960s along with the first houses of the Vilafortuny area, it has an adjoining patio where open air masses are held.
Castillo de Vilafortuny (Vilafortuny)
The origins of this castle are not known, although historical references of it date back to 1178 and it was probably rebuild during the repopulation of the area in 1152.
Iglesia de Mas d'en Bosc (Vilafortuny)
This small church was built in 1575 out of ruins of other nearby churches. It still has a small cemetery which was used by the people of Salou and Vila Seca as well as Cambrils. Every august there is a small festival held on this site.
Torre de l'Esquirol
This telegraph tower dates back to early 19th century and was used by officials to send visual signals. It has been recently renovated and is beautifully situated next to the beach.
Torre del Puerto
Build in 1664 to protect the town from pirate attacks, it has been rebuilt several times over the centuries and is the symbol of the Cambrils seafront. It has been converted into a museum about maritime life.
Portal de la calle Mayor
This is one of the gateways into the walled town of Cambrils . It has survived the ravages of time, military attacks and the more recent threat of urban expansion. It has been built in the 14th century.
